Skipping past the Trauma/Drama of April,

I’m Back in the Saddle for May(be)

Spring Haiku
from me to you

Things are stacking up,
sure to topple soon.
Living in shared fears.

I might hear the rain
falling but for the
ringing in my ears.

Tell me what you want…
what you really, really want…
This is what I want,
what I really, really want…

Just a simple discussion. Not a rant-fest, or finger-pointing exercise. A discussion of what makes you who you are, and if you are interested, how I have landed on my own box of soap.

I want someone to help me understand how we differ- and maybe in this process, we find we are not so different after all. An inspiring experience that uncovers those points where we meet in our Venn Diagram, like paternal twins meeting for the first time. I crave that discussion.

We are all trying to live our lives, we are all seeking safety and value. So, how do we differ from one another? and are those differences enough of a reason to inflict injury of any kind on another human?

These days I am hyper-focused on wanting equal rights for all- this encompasses a lot of territory, but of late, it is dialed in on gender and economic status. I challenge you to find a topic in today’s headlines that does not relate to one of these two subjects.

If you are the “right” gender (male for the purposes of this conversation), or one of the many other scientifically confirmed “others,” female being only one of them, but you are fortunate to have more than enough money, you may be accepted in the more restrictive party of elitists.

Conversely, if your tax bracket lives in a bad zip code, gender is of much less consequence as your value is determined by which political party you cling to, i.e., if you are not associated with the base, you are “other,” and therefore of little value.

And while we are speaking of genders…there are more than two. Check out what I have been reading up on…

While the notion of gender being a binary is widely debated, scientific studies exploring gender identity suggest a more complex reality. Research indicates that gender is not solely determined by biological sex, and that individuals may experience gender identities that fall outside the traditional male-female binary, according to experts at the Institute for Society and Genetics at UCLA.

Specifically, studies on intersex individuals and brain structure differences between transgender and cisgender individuals support this perspective.

Here’s a more detailed look at the scientific arguments:

  • Intersex Individuals:

Intersex individuals are born with variations in sex characteristics, challenging the binary understanding of male and female. These variations can include differences in chromosomes, hormones, or genitalia. The existence of intersex individuals highlights that sex is not a fixed, binary trait, but rather a spectrum.

  • Brain Structure:

Some studies have suggested that there may be differences in brain structure between transgender and cisgender individuals. For example, research by Tel Aviv University indicated that brains can have a “mosaic” of male and female characteristics. However, it’s important to note that these studies are correlational, and the findings are more of a correlation than a cause and effect relationship.

  • Social and Cultural Influences:

The concept of gender is not solely biological, but also influenced by social and cultural factors. Gender roles and norms vary across cultures and time periods, demonstrating that gender is a social construct, according to a thread on Reddit.

  • Gender Identity:

Gender identity is an individual’s personal sense of being male, female, both, or neither. It’s important to distinguish between gender identity and biological sex. Many individuals identify with gender identities that differ from their assigned sex at birth.

  • Ongoing Research:

Research in this area is ongoing, and new findings are continually emerging. The understanding of gender and its relationship to biology, psychology, and society continues to evolve.

Now, a warning: you are entering the soap box zone. Proceed with courage.

In relation to understanding others and trying to move off the sit-and-bitch bench (say that three times fast), I have written a response to former Republican Chairperson, Michael Steele’s comments on giving someone a cookie…Click the cookies for his piece.

Michael Steele on cookies and hamsters…
Now, a warning: you are entering the soap box zone. Proceed with courage.

Thank you, Mr. Steele, I agree. The question is, “how?”

How do we do this as US citizens who have spent years, for some of us our entire lives, enjoying the fruits of the labor of others long before us? The citizens who fought for the remaining rights we cling to today as we watch the edges erode away, and suffer the gut punches of the more brazen attacks on our democracy…how?

While the western side of Washington state is decidedly blue, the eastern part is less so.

Spokane County is rather conservative for an urban county, voting Republican for president all but three times since 1948. Democratic strength is concentrated in Spokane itself and in Cheney, which is home to Eastern Washington University, while the suburban areas are heavily Republican. (Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org>wiki>Spokane_County, Wa.)

The reason for my recent participation in a Hands Off rally one Saturday in April is due in part to a growing dread and depression I experience as I watch the eroding of our rights being yanked away by those in power as they lie about promises made, vows to protect basic human rights – rights that in a civilized world should not have to be spelled out or written down, but because of the foresight of our nation’s early founders, were spelled out. Were written down in something we call and used to cherish, The Constitution of the United States.

The Constitution of the United States

We the people…

I didn’t fail civics class in high school but it wasn’t my jam; I was busy crushing on the boy that sat in front of me. But for all I missed, I managed to digest the concepts of the balance of power, the separation of powers, and of church and state, and the most important take-away – “we the people.”

The United States is accurately described as a constitutional federal republic, also as a “modern” or “liberal” democracy. It’s a republic because power is vested in the people who elect representatives to govern. It’s also a constitutional republic because the government’s powers are defined and limited by the Constitution, the supreme law of the land. While the US incorporates elements of democracy, such as the direct election of representatives, it’s the Constitution that ultimately sets the rules and framework for our government, mediated by representation and checks and balances via the separation of powers.

It is the checks and balances and separation of powers that were designed to prevent this very thing that is happening today.

The Executive branch, to govern, has very specific rights to govern seamlessly, but not all-powerful. As the new country took shape and form, there would be no king. That’s why they left England. The Judicial branch had the job of weighing the evidence and deciding the legality of actions – then to spell out the rules and how to apply them. And finally, Congress, the legislative branch whose job is to design laws to protect and prosper all citizens.

Congress is comprised of 541 members, which includes 100 Senators (two from each of our 50 states), 435 Representatives, 5 members who are Delegates (from the District of Columbia, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands), and 1 member who is Resident Commissioner from Puerto Rico. All members are elected by the population of over 340 million people they represent. These elected members represent WE THE PEOPLE.

So we are a republic, not a true democracy. The problem that has reared its ugly head springs from the greed, arrogance, and short memory of many of those elected to represent us. The problem is in the lack of respect for what is inherently right or just. The problem is in the fear of the bully, Trump, who pushes for more and more control. The problem is in the eager capitulation to that bully in the effort to please, to not draw his vengeful, blatant and often illegal attention.

He has put in play an organized choreography to carry out the assault on dozens of targets at the same time, on a daily basis. This assault on the norm has taken the majority of US citizens by surprise, mostly at the brazen contempt for the law. And we shouldn’t be surprised. He is a convicted felon. He held the office before and ruled much in the same manner those four years. Yet, we are scrambling to take up the fight. In many cases his assault has broken the underpinnings that used to be there – a judicial system based on an oath to protect our constitution. Fear of a loss in favor, fear of losing a place at the table of abundance, fear of…

The loyal followers, his sycophant boot-lickers, and his base, are all people who believe he will be as loyal to them as they are to him. These people have swallowed so much Kool-Aid they are drowning in it and turning tangerine orange. Some followed his enticements to further their personal dogma, believing their “truth” without questioning or without evidence, often based on personal conviction or authority rather than objective truth. It can be found in various contexts, including religion, politics, and social attitudes. Dogmatic beliefs are typically held with unwavering conviction and resistance to change, even in the face of contradictory evidence (Social Security is a handout, health care for all is a communist plot, feeding underprivileged children is a waste of taxpayer money.)

Our current predicament is due in part to DJT’s understanding of the pooling masses inclination to get fired up when he blasts through legal barriers with multiple volleys of assault – a war on many fronts spreads the attention and reaction of his enemy – we the people.

Ketanji Brown Jackson
on intimidation of the judiciary

With Eyes Wide Open

He has successfully divided us by our interests. He knows he won’t win on all the battle fronts, but he knows he will on some and as those that oppose him race from one fire to the next carrying a bucket of water to put out a 5 alarm disaster. As he racks up points he is creating a perception among us that we can do nothing to stop him…that we can do nothing to stop him – God I hope that’s not true.

The Guardian’s Jessica Glenza and agency, reported Fri 2 May 2025 09.54 EDT…

Ketanji Brown Jackson addressed the current state of affairs at a conference of sitting Federal judges in Puerto Rico this week. In her words she described the attacks on our judicial system…condemning Trumps rhetoric as ‘designed to intimidate the judiciary,’ and the White House’s undermining of the constitution and rule of law – all without mentioning him by name.

“Across the nation, judges are facing increased threats of not only physical violence, but also professional retaliation just for doing our jobs,” said Jackson, according to the New York Times. “And the attacks are not random. They seem designed to intimidate  those of us who serve in this critical capacity.”

We have identified the problem. It cannot be corrected or eradicated by Saturday marches, where citizens are banding together shouting, “Trump and Musk have got to go,” or “Show me what Democracy looks like. THIS is what democracy looks like.” We are united on these points but that is not enough. Because he is dismantling any piece of our democracy that could put him down. A court rules against him so he has a judge arrested. He ignores rulings because he knows he can get away with it by lying, obfuscating, and simply pretending he has nothing to do with it. Amazon says they will expose what the tariffs mean on specific items, he calls Bezos, whines, and boom, no more tariff information. He bribes and threatens law firms. He threatens to deport US citizens and no one challenges him.

The slow, cumbersome and lumbering judicial system has worked since our brave beginning. But because justice takes time, thoughtful consideration and due diligence, if we follow this process we the people, those of us who still care about rights and the rule of law, we may be caught up in his spreading cancerous net, deported and incarcerated in a prison where the jailer is paid by Trump to keep us there.

So, Mr. Steele and other wise people who know how things work…I repeat, HOW DO WE STOP HIM?

If you have any ideas, something more than thoughts and prayers, please contact me. I will answer the call. I want to be part of the answer, not a prisoner here or in any other country.

Anyway, that’s where my brain is sitting today, and I am interested in meeting with anyone to find our juncture on the Venn…

Final Thoughts…

taxes rules
Taxes, Rules, Deadlines, oh my!

Papers and notes, preparing taxes,
and getting quotes
on replacing my 24 year old furnace;
Now I have a hot-off-the-line, shiny new
loan for the shiny new $7k beast.

Monitoring the run off from unexpected Mother’s Day rain,
and wondering if I will be dealing with basement wading pools again.

Watching for flowers to
pop their heads through heavy layers
of wet leaves…
Leaves I refuse to rake…

Celebrating my Mom’s birthday, April 29th – but that’s not tough enough,
because she died at the age of
71 years and one day, April 30th.
Again, tough, double whammy tough, but wait, wait! There’s more,

because then Mother’s Day,
and my heart is wearing the
black of mourning again.

At last, the moment comes;
bursts of color exploding
and blooming around me.
I am drenched in the love of my children…
All three remind me,
look forward
more than back.

I have posted this before,
but Mother’s Day comes every year…

Love Notes

On the ball but missed the shot… March madness continued…

I enjoy planning for holidays, so I started working on Easter right after Christmas. Unfortunately I missed getting it all put together in time…Sorry, Blue…watch for a package with ears to arrive sometime around your birthday.

We all heard the horror stories about how hard it would be to gather ye eggs this year due to arrogant prices, but I managed to buy, crack, boil, and devil a few. I don’t hide them anymore, too likely to forget where I hid them and that would be wasteful. Probably a little stinky too.

And finally, I say goodbye to the season of plenty (plenty of stress and anticipation). Till next spring, when I again give a polite nod to those stepping stones in my life…April 2nd, 29th, and 30th, and May 11th.

Looking forward to some trips, maybe more writing and…

Oscar’s slow zoomies.
Maybe the last time?
I smile through the pain.

I want to fly like an eagle,
or seagull… but I feel like the dodo…
Just want to sail away some days
